I wrote an Op-Ed for The Toronto Star, Canada’s largest daily, a few days after the reversal of Roe v Wade. This event sparked international outrage and a plethora of op-eds, thought-pieces and hot takes. I wanted to contribute something different. I decided to pitch to a Canadian daily and contemplate why this US Supreme Court decision should matter to Canadians.
I wanted to immediately catch readers’ attention, so I began the piece with the hook “The most influential court in the world has just declared that women do not have control over their own bodies.” Scary and true.
The copy was confident, decisive and authoritative. I relied on my expertise in reproductive justice and conducted further research on the Dobbs decision when crafting the opinion piece.

Though the subject matter (and the landscape I describe) is quite dark, I ended the article with actionable advice for Canadians looking to support pro-choice causes. My goal was to leave readers educated and empowered.
